Peterboroughs' downtown is packed with activities January 2012. If you don't know what's on, you've been sleeping! Wake up, stop hibernating and climb out of your cave. Open your eyes, look at the beautifully designed posters, listening to the radio, watching the telly, go on facebook, tweet, blog. For goodness sake, get involved in what's happening!

Do I need to say more? OK, just because you're obviously just waking up I will spell it out.

ReFrame Peterborough International Film Festival starts January 27th and continues until January 29th. Great films, wonderful entertainment and guaranteed a film for everyone's liking. Grab a festival catalogue this Friday January 13th at the Art Gallery of Peterborough during the official catalogue launch and the opening of a new exhibition or pick a catalogue up at one of the ticket agents - listed on the website - www.reframefilmfestival.ca

Because there are very few folks in this world who can watch films non-stop for three days. the DBIA has come up with a solution. It's called, Winterlicious and it is happening for the first time in downtown Peterborugh during ReFrame Peterborough International Film Festival.

Here's a plan. Watch a few films, visit one of the Still ReFrame Art Exhibitions, eat a bit of food, shop, take in another film or two and repeat for three days... What a weekend!

ReFrame Launches 2012 Catalogue and More...

With the opening of this year’s super weekend of films only a few weeks away, ReFrame Peterborough International Film Festival is announcing the launch of its 2012 Festival Program catalogue.
The event takes place on Friday, January 13, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Art Gallery of Peterborough in conjunction with the Gallery’s opening of a new exhibition.

What is exciting – beyond the coming festival, to be held January 27 to 29 – is that Joe Andrus of the design company Brandhealth has come up with a new look for ReFrame this year, and we think it is spectacular. It shows up in a beautiful carmine-coloured poster featuring a vintage box-office ticket and Palme d'Or-style icons enclosing the names of venues –complete with lightning bolts that reflect the sense of excitement and dynamism in the festival. Both the poster and the 34-page catalogue share these features, and more. The catalogue itself offers festival-goers an extensive and advance look at what is on offer at this year’s festival. The artwork has a QR code for easy download. ReFrame, we always like to say, is more than just a three-day festival – it is truly a community event. That’s why, working collaboratively with our community sponsors, we decided that the opening of a new exhibition at AGP would be the perfect time and location to launch the catalogue and offer advance tickets.

On the community side, there is even more: during the month of January an art exhibition/art event called Still ReFrame runs parallel to the film festival. Our goal is to develop the audience’s appreciation and awareness of the potential and impact of the arts – through the work of local artists - to convey social justice issues. Contact the artists or venues below for individual viewing times and other details. A Gallery Hop will take place on January 22 from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. The venues showcasing the various local artists will be open, and we encourage people to go from one gallery to the next to see the art and to mingle with the artists. On January 14 the educational wing of ReFrame begins with the launch of the REELkids Festival and the screening of the film The Sound of Mumbai, an emotional documentary about the power of music to inspire young people and bring them together. The film will be preceded by La Jeunesse Youth Orchestra from Port Hope. Already 4,800 students are registered to participate in the REELkids programs running from Monday, January 16 to Thursday, January 19. After REElkids, ReFrame revs up and gets ready for the total film extravaganza – three full days of movies beginning on Friday the 27th and running until late Sunday afternoon. Following many of the films there are question and answer sessions. The Showplace venue has an international bazaar– and there will be a community gathering. Eco-Pirate Pre-Fest Screening

Last Friday we held a pre-festival screening of Trish Dolman's film Eco-Pirate, in partnership with Kawatha World Issues Centre and OPIRG Peterborough. The film tells the story of Canada's own Paul Watson, former Green Peacer, now founder and president of the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society. It was a very revealing portrait of Watson, showing him as the hot-headed, stubborn, and arrogant man that he is - which is part of what made the film so great. This was no save the seals because they're cute film - this was hardcore eco-activism. Watson admittedly isn't humanities biggest fan, and says he's really doing it for the animals - so he gets things done, and he does it however he can. His favourite tactic: welding what resembles a giant tin-can opener to the side of his boat and ramming into whaling ships until they're laying on the bottom of the ocean. I can't help but picture him as an action-hero emblazoned on a poster in some young, activist-to-be's bedroom.

After the film, Gavin Fridell, Chair of Political Studies at Trent University, moderated a lively audience discussion. I'm not even going to try to summarize everything that was talked about - we had to stop the discussion around 9:30 because our time had run out - but even then, there was no shortage of hands hanging in the air, eager to share thoughts and opinions.

Rolling!

Rolling! is a short promotional film created by Isaac Schute - ReFrame's highschool placement student - and myself. We had a ton of fun shooting it, although getting a film canister to roll in a straight line, in the snow, while wearing winter gloves, is a lot harder than it looks. Luckily Isaac got the technique down, so if you need anything rolled, he's your man. Enjoy!

Guerrilla Filmmaking 101

Earlier today I had the opportunity to help out with the REELkids Guerrilla Filmmaking Workshop - a day of filmmaking at the Peterborough Public Library with students from Westmount Public School. The groups were challenged to make 1 minute films and the only guideline they had was their last scene had to be "And I used to hate the library!" What they came up with was amazing and more creative than I could have ever imagined - everything from James Bond reconnecting with his father, to a meowing unicorn!

Special thanks to the workshop facilitator, Jared Raab, his assistants Evan & Mike, Mrs. Elliott and especially the student participants. Great job guys!

ReFrame Bazaar

I don't know about you, but watching movies makes me hungry - and what better way to quiet your grumbling stomach than sampling the delicious foods offered at the ReFrame Bazaar. Craving Indian? Hungarian? Persian? Jamaican? The Bazaar has them all!

It's not just food though, a variety of vendors will be taking part with pottery, knitted socks, embroidery, fresh baked goods and more.

The Bazaar will be open during the festival hours on the lower level of Showplace Theatre. So make sure you stop by between films - it's a great place to catch up with old friends and make some new ones. See you there!

People have been asking me about weekend passes for ReFrame and everyone has been impressed by what a great deal they are. Then I started thinking, with passes priced at only $25 - $12 for students/unwaged - and the festival running 25+ hours over the 3 days, that's only $1 an hour - or under 50 cents for students/unwaged!

To go to the movie theatres these days will cost you over $5 on a cheap night, and that's only 2 hours of entertainment. With ReFrame, you also get to see a wide range of films from around the world on everything from human rights issues to the life of a humming bird.

At $1 an hour, how can you go wrong?

Film Making Tips & Tricks - Basics: The Tripod

Pick a point on your computer monitor, maybe the period at the end of this paragraph, and stare at it. Now wiggle your head around a bit, bounce up and down in your seat, or even try balancing on one foot while still staring at that point. What you'll find is your eyes and your brain start communicating and working together so that you can keep pretty good focus on that point - the human body really is an intelligent thing. Video cameras however, are pretty dumb in comparison. Luckily you can "smarten" them up with the use of a simple tripod.

A tripod is a three legged stand for your video camera. Why three? Well, four legged stands (tables, chairs, etc.) are great when you're on perfectly even terrain - but chances are you won't be - and when's the last time you saw an inanimate object stand reliably on two legs? With three legs, you can set up your tripod just about anywhere - even the side of a rocky hill - and keep it standing upright and sturdy.
The best part about tripods is not only can they really take your films from looking amateur to pro, but they can be fairly inexpensive too. Looking around online I found models as cheap as $60-$70, and if you aren't wanting to invest too much money into your equipment, three legs are three legs! That being said, if you plan on doing any smooth panning/tilting shots, you might have some troubles with the stubborn plastic mechanisms (although here's a neat solution).

Also something to think about if you don't like the idea of carrying around a tripod are table-top tripods. These little guys are usually in the 2"-4" height range and are great if you want something that can fit in the pocket of your camera bag. As the name suggests though, they're really only useful if they're on a table-top or some other surface to give it the full height you need. The company Joby has a neat solution for that though with their Gorillapod line - still small enough to take on a vacation, but their flexible legs allow them to stand, grip and cling pretty much anywhere.

What more convincing do you need? Go get yourself a tripod - your viewers will thank you!

Oscar Buzz

I mentioned in an earlier post that a couple of the films we're showing this year are getting some Oscar buzz - both Waste Land and Enemies of the People have made the short list for Best Documentary nominations. Of the 15 total short listed films, 5 will be chosen as official nominations and announced the morning of January 25th 2011.

I haven't seen Enemies of the People yet, but Waste Land is an amazing film and I'm not surprised to see it getting all this positive attention. In fact, we loved it so much, we chose it as our opening night feature film. And even if they don't make the cut (knock on wood), I highly recommend you add both to your must see films at this years festival.

Let's start with the Page. Becoming a Fan of our Page will take any post or update we put up and send it straight to your Facebook Newsfeed (what you see when you first login). So, if you find yourself checking your Facebook a couple times a day, this would be a good option for you

Film Making Tips & Tricks - Basics: The Camera

So, you want to make a film but you don't have thousands of dollars to spend on a camera. No worries! Luckily we're living in a digital age where anyone that knows how to use a computer can make their own videos and put them online for the world to see - and that's resulted in a cornucopia of inexpensive and sometimes surprisingly good quality cameras.

A great place to start is looking at what you already have. Chances are that phone in your pocket takes video - a lot of phones can't offer you much quality, but the latest smartphones are putting out full HD video. The folks over at majekpictures.com are just one group who have made some really beautiful short films shooting and editing all on an iPhone.

A really popular option right now if you're limited on funds is the Flip series of camcorders (or one of the many, many, many, many other options). Since it's release in '07, The Flip Ultra has been the best-selling camcorder on Amazon.com. These little guys capture 16:9, 720p, high-def video in an easy to use mp4 digital file format, feature great low light sensitivity, image stabilization, a tripod mount and can easily fit in your pocket! Their simple, intuitive button interface and standard 2" LCD view-screen make it easy for anyone to pick one up and start shooting. Now I wouldn't recommend a Flip if you're planning on going out and filming a feature length, high paced action flick, but they're perfect for those that want to host their own video blog show, record their upcoming family Christmas or shoot a fun short film. The one thing I don't like about them, and I'm really hoping they add in future models, is an audio input jack for hooking up an external microphone. The Flips do have a fairly good quality built-in stereo mic, but try filming anything outside on a windy day and all you'll be hearing is snaps and crackles. That's a pretty easy set-back to get past though when you look at the retail pricing of $159-$239 for the Flip line-up.

Moving up from there you have your consumer camcorders - and there's just so many to choose from that I can't even begin to write about any one in particular. The features you're going to want will vary depending on what you want to do with your camera, so I think your best tactic would be to write a list of all the scenarios of what you'll be doing with your camera, then asking your local camera shop clerk for a model that would be able to handle what you need it for. If you're going to be using it a lot for travel, consider what the body is made of for durability and the size/weight so it doesn't take up too much room in your luggage. Or if you're going to be shooting your first movie with it, make sure you have an audio input and invest in a decent directional microphone - the built-in mics on most camcorders will disappoint you in the end. No matter what you're going to be doing with it though, I'd definitely recommend purchasing a second battery. There's nothing worse than finally setting up the perfect shot, only to find your one and only battery has died.

A good camera may give you a better chance of creating the next short film to take the internet by storm, but it's no guarantee. Find something you're comfortable using - if you don't plan on using all those settings detailed in the novel sized manual, go for something simpler. And if you're not sure what's right for you, ask around to find a camera you can borrow or rent one for a few days and play around with it.

New Film Making Tips & Tricks Series

A film festival is nothing without film makers

But what is a film maker? Is it a multi-million dollar budget, with top-of-the-line equipment, a crew 100+ strong and years of experience? Maybe it's all in the recognition - box office ratings, reviews, awards. Or can anyone be a film maker?

I like to think that any person that has a story to tell is a film maker, they just may have never held a camera before. And that's why we're starting the Film Making Tips & Tricks Series - it's for all the people who have had ideas for fantastic films but thought that they needed more time/money/skill to do it right.

I'll be writing about the most common set-backs I've come across while making films with youth, along with some basic tips that will help everything go a lot smoother. On top of that, I'll be scouring the internet for other peoples' tricks to get professional results without a professional budget.

So, no matter how much experience you have now, follow along and you'll be making your own movies in no time. Who knows? Maybe one day you'll be showing your films at ReFrame!

Hey there, my name's Steve and for the next few months I'll be keeping you up to date on what's happening with the ReFrame Film Festival.

I moved to Peterborough earlier this year from Toronto, and was so happy to find just as much arts and culture happening here but with more of that small-town feel. While in Toronto I worked with youth in Regent Park and other low-income communities, teaching them how to use new media as a tool to help their voices be heard. Put a video camera in the hands of a young person and you'll be amazed at what they have to say! And that's why I connected with ReFrame - not only do I enjoy watching films, but I love the whole process of making them, and hopefully I can share a bit of that passion with you.

Hi film lovers and ReFrame fans,

Tomorrow at Noon - ReFrame begins!

Once again, for three film-packed days in downtown Peterborough from Friday January 29 to Sunday the 31, 2010, ReFrame turns its intensive, magical gaze on events and issues and triumphs and trials here, there, and everywhere.

On our new web site you can build your own personal festival calender, see trailers and photos and get the latest schedule and special event information.

We kick off the festival at Noon (12 pm) on Friday. We are screening the feature fiction film Bird's Nest at Showplace, documentaries A Year at Sherbrooke and Chance of a Lifetime at Market Hall as well as The End of the Line at the Public LIbrary. The Opening Night screening is 7:30 pm at Showplace. This year we are getting a rare glimpse into the lives of Burmese video journalists with Burma VJ.

Need a break from watching film? Take a walk throughout the downtown and visit the “Still ReFrame” Art Shows at Showplace, Natas, The Spill, Black Honey, and Blue Tomato Art Shop. A walking tour will leave Showplace Friday at Noon.

Come see Forgetful Not Forgotten at Showplace at 4pm- you will get a chance to hear from the director Chris Wynn on his experiences with Alzheimers.

Or go to Market Hall where filmmaker Lila Ghobady will present her film Forgotten Sun Dance which looks at the repression of dance under the Iranian revolution-also at 4 pm.

Save energy for Saturday evening, festival goers can take in singer/songwriter Sarah DeCarlo , dub poet Chet Singh, and musician Jarrett Prescott at the Kubo Lounge. Our closing night party will be at The Spill Cafe with a performance by Dub Trinity.

ReFrame Quickly Approaching

It's now sixteen days until ReFrame Peterborough International Film Festival's opens it's door for it's 6th annual festival.

The posters are up and tickets are for sale. And let's face it, at the end of January a film festival is a great ideal.

Check out our new interactive website at www.reframefilmfestival.ca and let the "festival genius" help you to select films. By simply registering on our festival site you can see what films other film goers are interested in, and, get this, you can also comment on the films after you've seen them at the festival. If you don't want to join, that's fine too, simply have a look at the site to see a listing of the films, the feature films, the filmmakers who are attending, the workshops you might like to participate in and the art exhibitions running concurrently with the festival.

If you don't know where to purchase passes, for goodness sakes, visit the website (www.reframefilmfestival.ca/reframe.html) . All the information is there for you. If you'd rather have a a hard copy program then go out in the cold to one of the ticket sellers and pick one up.

Hello festival goers! It's Krista here writing to you from New Zealand where I'm on a years sabbatical with my husband and family. I'm writing this blog to promote the up and coming ReFrame Film Festival. Even thought I'm half way around the world I can still send this gentle reminder. DON'T MISS THE FESTIVAL!

We Will be Launching a New Website

ReFrame is thrilled to announce that we will be launching our new website in late September 2009. For the past four years Quidnovis (www.quidnovis.com) has provided us with space on their community website. It has been an incredible donation and we will be forever grateful to them for getting ReFrame up on the web and helping us navigate our way through it. Quidnovis will continue to support ReFrame by hosting of our website.

It was a very exciting time for ReFrame this summer when Esther Vincent from Mustang Web Design (www.evmustang.ca) agreed to share her skill and design abilities with us to create our own website. Mustang has been very patient in teaching us the ways of the web design world so we can have a nice looking but still very functional site. I learned very quickly that there is way more to web design than what meets the eye. ReFrame certainly has a new appreciation for web design. Thanks Esther you have been wonderful to work with.

This leads me to the the site graphics. We love the look of the site and we have lots of other design changes coming for our 2010 festival thanks to Brandhealth. Brandheath is now the new designer for the festival so stay tuned for whats coming out of their design room. Brandhealth (www.brandhealth.ca) has been amazing to work with over the past 10 month coming on board late last year to design our new and amazing one pager folded program to help the festival become greener. Thanks Brandhealth

We want to take this opportunity to remember acknowledge and to thank Jennifer Tiberio Designs. Jennifer Tiberio was the festival's founding designer and has provided us with outstanding design for 5 years. Her ever beautiful, creative design and attention to detail helped the festival grow to what it is today. Jennifer is a very busy designer mainly based out of Toronto. We are sad to say goodbye but we understand the time necessary to do the our design was becoming increasing difficult with all of the other work she is doing in Toronto. Thanks Jenn, you will be forever missed and we will feel forever grateful for your contribution to the festival.

Who are we?
ReFrame (formerly the Traveling World Community Film Festival-Peterborough) is an international film festival showcasing outstanding and compelling film and video that strive to raise community awareness of cultural, social justice and environmental issues on local, national and international scale.

When is the festival?
ReFrame: Peterborough International Film Festival will take place in January 29-31/10. The venues are Showplace, Market Hall and Peterborough Public Library

ReFrame 2009: Showplace recap

Showplace was my place for this year's ReFrame: Peterborough International Film Festival. This is the 5th year for the festival but the first time on with a new name in an effort to shorten the former name, "Traveling World Community Film Festival Peterborough," and to distinguish itself from the model that a festival by the same name in Courtney, B.C. provided.

This year, the new program was made from scratch but keeps it activist and issue based as in previous years.

The festival was a great way to see new work by established artists on the big screen and with an audience. Veteran documentary filmmakers like Alanis Obomsawin (Gene Boy Come Home, 2007), Robert Lang (Return to Nepal with Bruce Cockburn, 2008), Nettie Wild (Bevel Up, 2007), Mark Achbar (Blue Gold, 2008) and Nick Broomfield (Ghosts, 2006) represented.

The personal documentaries stood out for me, with a couple big highlights: Searching 4 Sandeep and She's a Boy I Knew. Both films are very emotional works that is at one end of the spectrum of films shown at Showplace - hand-held and personal. The other end is the orderly and journalistic side of documentaries that can only sometimes work on a cerebral level but it can work really well like Addicted to Plastic, Taking Root and Blue Gold.

Out of all the features, I'm almost surprised to say my favorite would have to be Garbage Warrior - a portrait documentary that successfully mashes both personal and journalistic but unfortunately suffers from a misleading title. A title like Garbage Architect would have hit the nail on the head.

It's always interesting to hear filmmakers speak and answer questions after the screening of their films. It extends the experience and makes the issues they raise that much more real. Filmmakers like Ian Connacher, Tracey Deer, Robert Lang, and Bay Weyman appeared on stage to take questions.

Programing the festival was handled by a committee and was directed by Krista English. The flow of the films made sense and performers from live spoken word artists, singers, drummers were there to get the audience in the mood and, with helpful introductions from ReFrame staff and volunteers before each film, the audience knew how to receive the film they were about to see.
